Chapter Seven

As Jenny adjusted the strap on the sexiest pair of heels she owned, she tried calming her turbulent nerves. Brett was supposed to pick her up any minute, and she’d been teetering on the edge of a breakdown for most of the day. Rolling her eyes, she huffed out a frustrated breath. She couldn’t imagine why she was so worked up by the prospect of the date. Was it her new pregnancy hormones making her crazy? After all, it wasn’t like she hadn’t been out with him before.

Okay, so she couldn’t exactly consider going back to his hotel room as being out with him, but still. Besides their hot-as-hell hookup, she’d spent those two times with him at O’Malley’s. Then she had hung out with him the rest of the night at the pregnancy party. It wasn’t one-on-one time because that would’ve raised suspicion; instead, she had chatted with him and his family. She really liked his parents, and she knew they would make wonderful grandparents for Jeff and Connor’s baby.

Besides her strappy heels, she wore a short black dress with spaghetti straps, one she liked to wear when she went clubbing with friends. Smoothing her hands over the fabric, she couldn’t help feeling sexy. That’s right, she could be both sexy and pregnant. It didn’t have to be an either-or situation.

Jenny glanced back at the couch where her Australian Heeler, Sarge, kept watch over her. “Whatcha think, Sarge? Am I rocking the hot pregnant chick look?” When Sarge wagged his tail, she laughed. Reaching over to scratch his ears, she replied, “Thanks for the vote of confidence, buddy.”

She jumped at both the sound of the doorbell and Sarge’s incessant barking. When she popped up off the couch a little too fast, she was overtaken by a dizzy spell. Once the room wasn’t spinning around her, she hurried to the door, her heels click-clacking across the floor. Sucking in a calming, deep breath, she threw open the door. The smile she’d plastered on her lips froze at the sight of Brett before her.

Instead of the shirt and tie she had anticipated, he wore his signature tight-fitting jeans, plaid shirt, and cowboy boots. Although she tried hard to hide her surprise, Brett’s expression told her he could read her mind. With a sheepish grin, he said, “Guess you were expecting ‘Brett from the party’ for your date, not ‘Brett the cowboy’, huh?”

“No, no, that’s not it at all.”

Brett cocked his head at her. “Now don’t start off our first date by lying.”

Throwing up her hands in defeat, Jenny replied, “Okay, okay. I assumed when you asked me out on a date, we would be going to dinner.”

“You assumed correctly, because I do plan on taking you to dinner. It’s just somewhere without a strict dress code.”

“Oh, okay. No problem.”

Stroking his chin thoughtfully, Brett said, “I think it’s probably best if you change.”

Heat singed Jenny’s cheeks at the dismissal of her attire. However, her hormones soon turned her mortification to outrage.
