Chapter Seven
As Jenny adjusted the strap on the sexiest pair of heels she owned, she tried calming her turbulent nerves. Brett was supposed to pick her up any minute, and sheâd been teetering on the edge of a breakdown for most of the day. Rolling her eyes, she huffed out a frustrated breath. She couldnât imagine why she was so worked up by the prospect of the date. Was it her new pregnancy hormones making her crazy? After all, it wasnât like she hadnât been out with him before.
Okay, so she couldnât exactly consider going back to his hotel room as being out with him, but still. Besides their hot-as-hell hookup, sheâd spent those two times with him at OâMalleyâs. Then she had hung out with him the rest of the night at the pregnancy party. It wasnât one-on-one time because that wouldâve raised suspicion; instead, she had chatted with him and his family. She really liked his parents, and she knew they would make wonderful grandparents for Jeff and Connorâs baby.
Besides her strappy heels, she wore a short black dress with spaghetti straps, one she liked to wear when she went clubbing with friends. Smoothing her hands over the fabric, she couldnât help feeling sexy. Thatâs right, she could be both sexy and pregnant. It didnât have to be an either-or situation.
Jenny glanced back at the couch where her Australian Heeler, Sarge, kept watch over her. âWhatcha think, Sarge? Am I rocking the hot pregnant chick look?â When Sarge wagged his tail, she laughed. Reaching over to scratch his ears, she replied, âThanks for the vote of confidence, buddy.â
She jumped at both the sound of the doorbell and Sargeâs incessant barking. When she popped up off the couch a little too fast, she was overtaken by a dizzy spell. Once the room wasnât spinning around her, she hurried to the door, her heels click-clacking across the floor. Sucking in a calming, deep breath, she threw open the door. The smile sheâd plastered on her lips froze at the sight of Brett before her.
Instead of the shirt and tie she had anticipated, he wore his signature tight-fitting jeans, plaid shirt, and cowboy boots. Although she tried hard to hide her surprise, Brettâs expression told her he could read her mind. With a sheepish grin, he said, âGuess you were expecting âBrett from the partyâ for your date, not âBrett the cowboyâ, huh?â
âNo, no, thatâs not it at all.â
Brett cocked his head at her. âNow donât start off our first date by lying.â
Throwing up her hands in defeat, Jenny replied, âOkay, okay. I assumed when you asked me out on a date, we would be going to dinner.â
âYou assumed correctly, because I do plan on taking you to dinner. Itâs just somewhere without a strict dress code.â
âOh, okay. No problem.â
Stroking his chin thoughtfully, Brett said, âI think itâs probably best if you change.â
Heat singed Jennyâs cheeks at the dismissal of her attire. However, her hormones soon turned her mortification to outrage.
